ALTA CEU INFORMATION FOR 2005 - 2007

 

I.                The next CEU period extends from March 1, 2005 to February 28, 2007.

 

            During this period, ALTA members will be responsible for documenting, for their personal files, 30 contact hours of continuing education credit (3 CEUs) every three years.  Two percent of our membership will be randomly chosen for sudit in the Spring of 2007.

 

            Qualified instructors must provide documentation of 10 contact hours of continuing education credit (1 CEU) each year when submitting their membership for renewal.

           

            At least 5 contact hours must be earned by attendance IN PERSON at conferences, workshops, or meetings during the next two-year period.  You may attain the remaining contact hours of CEU credit through the alternative means suggested in section III of this document.

 

II.        Conferences/Workshops/Meetings

 

A.     Conferences approved for contact hours of CEU credit will be posted on the calendar of the ALTA website and in the ALTA newsletter.    

           

B.     Events sponsored by the following are always approved, even if they are not listed on the ALTA calendar. These sponsors are:

·        ALTA

·        ALTA - affiliated training centers    

·        IMSLEC - affiliated courses

·        The International Dyslexia Association and its branches and other organizations concerned with dyslexia and/or related learning disabilities.

     

B.     Events offered by the following are subject to the approval of the CEU Committee.  Approval is based on compliance with the professional standards of ALTA.

·        College and University programs regarding dyslexia and/or related  learning disabilities

·        Public education service centers (in Texas) and related professional organizations that are concerned with dyslexia and/or related learning disabilities.

 

C.     Upon attendance, each therapist is responsible for obtaining a signed certificate of attendance from the sponsor of an event.

 

D.     Please encourage sponsors of events pertaining to dyslexia and/or related learning differences to apply for ALTA contact hours of CEU credit. (Information for application is available on our website -- Go To Sponsoring Agency Event Approval Form (online) | (printable))

 

E.       If you would like to attend a conference that has not been approved for ALTA contact hours, you must obtain individual approval two weeks prior to the conference.

  

III.      Alternative ways to earn contact hours of CEU credit.

 

A.     Give a presentation.  Two contact hours of CEU credit can be earned for each hour of your presentation.   You must use the following guidelines:

1.       Contact hours are limited to one presentation of the same topic.

2.       The information presented must be based on current (within the last 3 years) and significant research.

3.      A bibliography is a required for documentation.

4.      An outline of your presentation is required for documentation.

5.      The content must follow ALTA guidelines (see the ALTA bylaws).

6.      All documentation must be kept in your personal files in the event that you are chosen for audit.

 

B.      Read journals or books.   

1.       The 2005 or 2006 Annals of Dyslexia journal published by the International Dyslexia Association.

a.       Four contact hours of CEU credit can be earned for each issue.

b.      Write a summary of each article.

c.       Keep the summaries in your personal files. Do not send the summaries to ALTA unless you are chosen for audit. 

2.       Books published 2000 or later.

         a.       A list of suggested books is posted on the ALTA web site.  Click here to view the CEU Book List.

         b.      Three contact hours of CEU credit can be earned for each book.

         c.       Book report forms are available on our website or through the ALTA office.  Click here to access a Book Report Form.

         d.      Keep the reports in your personal files. Do not send the reports to ALTA unless you are chosen for audit.

         e.       The CEU committee welcomes your recommendations of appropriate books.

 

C.     Listen to current audio recordings. 

1.      The International Dyslexia Association annual conference (2005, 2006) is available on audio tape from Convention Recordings, Inc., 6983 Sunset Drive South, St. Petersburg, FL 33707, telephone: (727) 345-8288.

2.      One contact hour of CEU credit can be earned for each hour spent listening to audio recordings.

3.      Write a summary of each session that you review.

4.      Keep the summaries in your personal files.  Do not send the summaries to ALTA unless you are audited.

 

D.     Watch a current (2000 or later) video of a conference or workshop.

1.      These may be available through a training center, the International Dyslexia Association, or other sources. 

2.      Suggested choices will be posted on the ALTA website and in the newsletter.

3.      One contact hour of CEU credit may be earned for each one-hour video viewed.

4.      Write a summary of each video.

5.      Keep the summaries in your personal files.  Do not send the summaries to ALTA unless you are audited.

6.      The CEU Committee is interested in your suggestions of appropriate videos.

 

E.      Organize an ALTA professional group in your area.

1.      Several groups meet periodically to hear speakers and exchange news and ideas.   It is a great way to meet other therapists, as well as earn contact hours for CEU credit.

2.      Contact the ALTA Membership chairman for further information on how to set up a group.
