Legislative Issues

The Federal government and some states have laws that attempt to protect the needs of people with disabilities. Dyslexia can be a disabling condition. In an attempt to provide the public with knowledge of their rights under the law, the Academic Language Therapy Association provides information pertaining to dyslexia law. Contacts have been provided within this area to facilitate communication with your Senator, Congressperson, and State government representative.

Congressman Lamar Smith is chairing the dyslexia caucus in Congress. He has been very active in meeting with lawmakers in Texas to discuss the importance of helping children with dyslexia. We need our ALTA members to call their Congressmen and ask them to join the dyslexia caucus in Congress. We presented Congressman Smith with the ALTA Champion for Children with Dyslexia award in his office in Washington DC. He is from San Antonio, TX, and he has a niece with dyslexia who recently graduated from Yale and has started a successful career.
