THERAPY AND TEACHING LEVEL COURSES BY STATE

 

The International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) accredits training courses that prepare individuals in the use of multisensory structured language education programs. The training provided by IMSLEC accredited courses meets the requirements set by ALTA to sit for the Alliance National Registration Exam and therefore, for membership in ALTA at both the Therapy Level and the Associate/Teaching Level.  For more information on IMSLEC visit www.imslec.org or call 972-774-1772.

Payne Education Center trains teachers to prepare children with dyslexia and reading difficulties for success in reading, writing and spelling, and serves as a referral and resource center. Graduate credit for Alphabetic Phonics Language Therapist Training is offered through the University of Central Oklahoma. PEC also presents local and on site classes for teachers of pre-kindergarten through high school.

The Stratford Friends School Multisensory Teacher Training Program is part of the Stratford Friends School Outreach Program, and offers continuing education credit through local intermediate units for public and private school classroom teachers who wish to learn the structure of the English language and the procedures for teaching dyslexic children how to read, write and spell. A two-part introductory course and an advanced course are given yearly, and include lecture, practicums, and supervised teaching. Those who wish to qualify for the Academic Language Therapy Association examinations to become Certified Academic Language Therapists may also enroll in these courses.

Neuhaus Education Center provides professional development for educators in research-based methods of reading instruction, serves as a resource and referral center for parents, and offers adult literacy classes. In addition to its Dyslexia Specialist Preparation Program, the Center provides classes for teachers of preschool through adult literacy students. The Center offers selected classes through Interactive Video Conferencing and web-based instruction.

The Scottish Rite Learning Center of Austin, Inc. offers educators the required courses and workshops to become Certified Academic Language Therapists as well as serving as a referral center for parents and professionals. Currently, the SRLC provides diagnosed students with dyslexia, ages seven through twelve, with an intensive Orton-Gillingham based curriculum at no charge to the student and family through the generosity of the Scottish Rite Masons. Additionally, the SRLC makes available low-cost educational evaluations for dyslexia and provides summer school for students with dyslexia grades first through twelfth.

The Scottish Rite Learning Center of West Texas (SRLCWT) offers the Dyslexia Therapist Training Course to teachers who desire to become a specialist in teaching children with dyslexia. Graduate level credit from Texas Tech University is available for those attending the two-year training program. The Scottish Rite Masons offer research-based instruction for students with dyslexia at no charge to the student or their family. The center also serves as a resource and referral service for parents and others needing information about dyslexia.

The Shelton MSL Training Course offers training and certification in Sequential English Education, a specific language series (reading, writing and spelling) program for students with learning differences, ages six through adulthood.  The SEE approach is alphabetic, phonetic, structural and linguistic.  Certification is available at the Teaching and Therapy levels.  Graduate level credit is offered through Dallas Baptist University. The training is provided by the Outreach Department at Shelton School, the largest school for students with learning differences in the world.

The Learning Therapist Certificate Program at Southern Methodist University is a two-year graduate program for individuals seeking professional education as an academic language therapist. The Learning Therapist Certificate program is a 22-hour professional certification program for individuals interested in working with children or adults who have dyslexia or related language learning disorders. Graduate students receive theoretical preparation and extensive applied practice in the structures of written English, multisensory teaching methods and sequential procedures for teaching written-language skills and learning strategies. The graduate-level course work is offered through the School of Education and Human Development. Graduate students may elect to complete a Master's in Education degree in Learning Therapy by completing additional hours. For the duration of the program, Learning Therapists-in-Training work with private clients or in school settings and routinely prepare student progress reports. The program also provides referrals for parents and therapists.

Southwest is a training center that offers educators the courses and workhops required to become Academic Language Therapists able to take the required exam through Alta to become certified. The model the training center uses is an integrated model of Alphabetic Phonics, the new 2006 Scottish Rite Dyslexia material, and we place a special emphasis on integrating written expression. This model encourages the use of literature as well as students being encouraged to become their own authors. The training center offers instruction in Verbal into Written Expression, Multisensory Study Skills, and Sandi O'Connor's Multisensory Math Program. The center also serves as an outreach for students and parents. Graduate credit is offered through The University of North Texas. The Center serves also as a referral service for parents and therapists.

The Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders of Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children offers a 2-year Dyslexia Therapist training course to certified Texas public school teachers. The course incorporates academic instruction, clinical training, and supervised teaching specifically designed to meet the special needs of the student with dyslexia.  The areas of study include: characteristics of dyslexia, including screening; a phonetic approach to teaching reading; cognitive approach to teaching spelling; listening comprehension leading to reading comprehension; multisensory approach to grammar and expression; and sequential, multisensory strategies for presenting the structure of written American English.
