About Cheryl Prince, CALT, LDT

Cheryl is a graduate of The University of North Texas. She has been a language therapist and teacher at Shelton for over 35 years. She is trained in multiple reading methods as well as multisensory math. She has been sewing since middle school but was only introduced to quilting about eight years ago by her sister. She fell in love with the craft and loves creating beautiful designs. This butterfly quilt was created for ALTA to remind us that when we teach our students to read, we change their lives and help them “fly.” Congratulations to whoever wins this quilt. We hope you enjoy it.

KEYNOTE: The Writing Rope: A Framework for Explicit Writing in All Subjects

This workshop includes an overview of The Writing Rope model for writing instruction (Sedita, 2019). Many teachers do not recognize that effective writing instruction must address multiple components, represented as strands in a rope in this model. An explanation with references to research findings will be provided for the five strands: 1) Critical Thinking (generating ideas and information, stages of the writing process), 2) Syntax (syntactic awareness, sentence elaboration, punctuation), 3) Text Structure (narrative, informational, opinion; paragraph structure; patterns of organization, 4) Writing Craft (awareness of task, audience, purpose; word choice; literary devices, 5) Transcription (spelling and handwriting fluency). This workshop addresses writing instruction across grades 3-12.

The Evolving Role of Dyslexia Therapists in Texas Schools: Expanding your expertise to confidently contribute to the dyslexia Full and Individual Initial Evaluation (FIIE)

This presentation will discuss the recent mandates brought about by HB 3928 and the potential impact on the role of licensed and certified dyslexia therapists in schools across Texas. Licensed Dyslexia Therapists and Certified Academic Language Therapists are highly skilled and knowledgeable of the reading process, the dyslexia profile, conducting analysis of a preponderance of data, the importance of evidence-based dyslexia instruction for students with dyslexia and much more. Utilizing the training and expertise you have to contribute to the multidisciplinary team, participants will engage in a mock decision making scenario using a student profile to consider the two prong eligibility criteria for a dyslexia diagnosis under IDEA.

Conquering Learning Disabilities: How an ADHD/LD Kid Graduated from Yale and Cambridge

As a trained and established historian, Dr. Rigg gives historical explanations and background of where learning disabilities (LD) like Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia come from and why we have them. After defining and exploring LD, ADHD and dyslexia, Dr. Rigg chronicles his life of ADHD and dyslexia and how he struggled with it and has used it, ultimately, to his benefit. In doing this, he has consulted countless experts and interviewed former teachers to bring to light the techniques that helped him succeed as a student, as a professional and as a parent.
