Sponsor: BBB Educational Enterprises
Type: Continuing Education

Contact Hours: 6
Dates / Times: Tuesday, February 27, 08:30 AM - 03:30 PM
Description: This session explores the key characteristics of strong phonics instruction [e.g., readiness skills (phonemic awareness/alphabet recognition), sensible scope and sequence, blending, dictation, word awareness (word building and word sorts), high-frequency words, connected text reading, and teacher expertise] and the 10 common causes of phonics instructional failure. Participants will explore these instructional issues through a combination of discussion and hands-on exploration with the goal of fine-tuning them to maximize instructional success. This workshop is based on Blevins’ work with school districts—examining test scores vs. instructional tools and classroom practices to identify the mismatches and areas of weakness that impede or slow learning. (for Phonics-Blevins) Are you wondering what these terms really mean, or how to better implement and integrate them to meet the needs and accelerate the literacy learning of your students? Join us for an afternoon of diving deep into powerful contexts for reading instruction. In this session, we will discuss the frameworks and architecture of guided reading, reading conferences and strategy groups. We will actively engage in collaborative planning for guided reading; learn how to formatively assess students to quickly determine teaching points that propel readers forward in their reading process; and make connections between these teaching points and conferring with readers in reading workshop. Finally, we will discuss and engage in crafting lessons for strategy groups that enhance student understanding and application of various reading comprehension skills and strategies.
