Description: This presentation will focus on the sub-skills required to become a skilled reader. A brief overview will be provided about how a non-impacted brain acquires language skills (Kenneth Pugh's research), including language benchmarks at each age. Statistics on impacted readers, the underlying causes, and the neurobiological origins of dyslexia will follow, but the majority of time will be spent sharing researched proven methods to increase phonological awareness and letter naming fluency in children as young as preschool. Preschool and primary resources which support the development of Phonemic Awareness and Letter Naming Fluency will be demonstrated.
